The change area is the hinge the whole procedure turns on

Everything about how a childcare centre is cleaned follows from one rule: nothing used in a nappy change area may ever reach a room where children eat, sleep or play. That is what the colour coding is for, and it is why the coding is worth insisting on even though it sounds like a formality. It is a control that can be checked by looking — a director can see whether the right cloth is in the right room, which is worth considerably more than an assurance in a meeting.

The change area itself gets its own line in the scope, its own equipment and its own method: benches, bins, taps, dispensers and the floor around them, cleaned and disinfected with the product’s stated contact time actually observed, every visit. Not folded into “amenities”, which is where it goes to be forgotten.

Toys, mats and cots — the surfaces children actually touch

If a scope does not name them, they do not happen. Toys are the single most reliably skipped item in a childcare cleaning contract, which is remarkable given they are the surfaces the children spend the most time in contact with. So: hard toys washed and dried on a stated cycle. Rest mats and sleep surfaces wiped every visit. Cot rails and frames on a cycle. High chairs after use. Soft items to the centre’s own laundry arrangement on the schedule the centre sets, because that is the centre’s call, not ours.

Every one of those carries a frequency in the written scope, and the rotation is recorded so it can be audited rather than assumed.

Low-tox, and the product list the centre chooses

We work to low-tox, low-odour products in childcare rooms, and we supply the safety data sheet for everything we bring onto the premises. If your centre has its own approved product list — many do, and many have thought harder about it than most contractors have — we work to your list rather than ours. That is not a concession, it is the correct order of authority.

Where disinfection is genuinely required, the contact time is observed. A disinfectant sprayed on and wiped straight off has cleaned the surface without disinfecting it, and from anywhere in the room the two actions look identical. It goes into the procedure and it is taught at induction.

Overnight, and the building left secure

We clean after the last child has gone, so that no equipment and no chemistry is ever on the floor while children are present, and so the rooms are finished before the first family arrives in the morning. Centres with very early starts sometimes prefer a pre-dawn round; either works, but the scope states the window, the access procedure and who secures the building. A childcare centre is not a building anybody wants left unlocked.
