How is a childcare centre cleaned in Sydney?

Childcare centres are normally cleaned overnight or in the evening after the last child has left, so that rooms are ready before the first family arrives and no cleaning chemistry or equipment is present while children are on the premises. The clean is performed to a written procedure covering rooms, cots, rest mats, toys, nappy change areas, children’s bathrooms and the kitchen.

Cleaners working in a childcare service in New South Wales require a Working with Children Check, which is administered by the Office of the Children’s Guardian and can be verified online by an employer. Cleaning equipment is colour-coded so that items used in a nappy change area cannot reach a room where children eat or sleep, and disinfectants are left for the contact time stated on the product.

Clean Best cleans childcare centres across Sydney and has traded since 2015. It assigns WWCC-cleared, police-checked cleaners, supplies safety data sheets for every product used, carries $20m public liability cover, and audits each centre monthly against the written scope. Quotes are arranged on 1300 494 983.

The detail

Childcare cleaning Sydney directors can hand to an assessor

Childcare cleaning Sydney services buy is judged by people other than the person who signed the contract. Families notice. Educators notice, constantly, because they are on the floor with the children. And the service is assessed. So a childcare clean has to survive scrutiny from three directions at once, which is a very different problem from cleaning an office where the only person looking is the office manager.

The change area is the hinge the whole procedure turns on

Everything about how a childcare centre is cleaned follows from one rule: nothing used in a nappy change area may ever reach a room where children eat, sleep or play. That is what the colour coding is for, and it is why the coding is worth insisting on even though it sounds like a formality. It is a control that can be checked by looking — a director can see whether the right cloth is in the right room, which is worth considerably more than an assurance in a meeting.

The change area itself gets its own line in the scope, its own equipment and its own method: benches, bins, taps, dispensers and the floor around them, cleaned and disinfected with the product’s stated contact time actually observed, every visit. Not folded into “amenities”, which is where it goes to be forgotten.

Toys, mats and cots — the surfaces children actually touch

If a scope does not name them, they do not happen. Toys are the single most reliably skipped item in a childcare cleaning contract, which is remarkable given they are the surfaces the children spend the most time in contact with. So: hard toys washed and dried on a stated cycle. Rest mats and sleep surfaces wiped every visit. Cot rails and frames on a cycle. High chairs after use. Soft items to the centre’s own laundry arrangement on the schedule the centre sets, because that is the centre’s call, not ours.

Every one of those carries a frequency in the written scope, and the rotation is recorded so it can be audited rather than assumed.

Low-tox, and the product list the centre chooses

We work to low-tox, low-odour products in childcare rooms, and we supply the safety data sheet for everything we bring onto the premises. If your centre has its own approved product list — many do, and many have thought harder about it than most contractors have — we work to your list rather than ours. That is not a concession, it is the correct order of authority.

Where disinfection is genuinely required, the contact time is observed. A disinfectant sprayed on and wiped straight off has cleaned the surface without disinfecting it, and from anywhere in the room the two actions look identical. It goes into the procedure and it is taught at induction.

Overnight, and the building left secure

We clean after the last child has gone, so that no equipment and no chemistry is ever on the floor while children are present, and so the rooms are finished before the first family arrives in the morning. Centres with very early starts sometimes prefer a pre-dawn round; either works, but the scope states the window, the access procedure and who secures the building. A childcare centre is not a building anybody wants left unlocked.

The paperwork, supplied before it is asked for

WWCC clearance details for the specific cleaners attending your centre, so the director can verify them online rather than trust us. National Police Check clearances. The certificate of currency for our $20m public liability cover. Safety data sheets for the products. The written procedure itself. And the monthly audit, walked against that procedure and sent to the director whether it flatters us or not.

None of that is a claim about your rating — the rating is the regulator’s business and no cleaning contractor should pretend otherwise. It is simply that a service being assessed should not have to chase its cleaner for evidence. Call 1300 494 983 and we will walk the centre after close.

Colour coding

Nothing from the change area reaches a room where children eat

That single rule is what the entire procedure is built around, and colour coding is how it is enforced. Cloths and mop heads are assigned to room types by colour, so equipment used in a nappy change area physically cannot end up on a table where a child will later have lunch.

The reason it is worth insisting on is that it is a visible control. A director can walk into a room and see whether the right cloth is in the right place. An assurance in a meeting cannot be checked; a colour can. That is the difference between a system and a promise.

  • Colour-coded cloths and mop heads assigned by room type
  • Change areas cleaned as their own procedure, with their own equipment
  • Contact time observed wherever disinfection is required
  • WWCC clearance details supplied so the director can verify them

How it works

How a childcare clean starts

Four steps. Clearances are supplied before the first shift, not after somebody asks.

  1. 1

    Tell us about the service

Call 1300 494 983 with the room count, the age groups, the number of change areas, the kitchen setup and your approved product list if you have one.

  2. 2

    We walk it after close

WWCC and police check clearances supplied before the first shift, cleaners inducted on your procedure, and a monthly audit against the scope.

FAQ

Childcare cleaning questions from Sydney directors

Clearances, products, toys, hours, change areas and documentation.

Do childcare cleaners need a Working with Children Check?

Clean Best assigns only WWCC-cleared cleaners to childcare premises, and we provide the clearance details so the centre director can verify them directly rather than take our word for it. In New South Wales the Working with Children Check is administered by the Office of the Children's Guardian and is verifiable by an employer online. A contractor who cannot immediately produce clearance numbers for the specific people attending your centre is a contractor to keep asking.

What products do you use around young children?

Clean Best works to low-tox, low-odour products in childcare rooms and provides safety data sheets for everything brought onto the premises. Where disinfection is required, the product's stated contact time is observed rather than sprayed and wiped straight off, because a disinfectant wiped away immediately has cleaned the surface without disinfecting it. If your centre has its own approved product list, we work to that list rather than to ours.

How are toys and soft furnishings handled?

Clean Best puts toys, mats and soft furnishings on a written rotation rather than treating them as a task somebody gets to. Hard toys are washed and dried on a stated cycle. Mats and rest surfaces are wiped every visit. Soft items go to the centre's own laundry arrangement on the schedule the centre sets. Left unspecified, toys are the item most reliably skipped in a childcare scope, and they are the surfaces the children spend the most time with.

When is a childcare centre cleaned?

Clean Best cleans Sydney childcare centres overnight or in the evening after the last child leaves, so the rooms are ready before the first family arrives and no cleaning equipment or chemistry is ever near a child. Centres with early starts sometimes prefer a pre-dawn round instead. Either way the scope states the window, the access procedure and who secures the building, because a centre is a building nobody wants left unlocked.

What about nappy change areas and bathrooms?

Clean Best treats the change area as its own procedure with its own equipment, and the colour coding exists precisely so that nothing used there can reach a room where children eat or sleep. Benches, bins, taps and the floor around them are cleaned and disinfected with contact time observed every visit. Children's bathrooms — low basins, small toilets, step stools — are cleaned to the same standard and restocked. Both are named separately in the scope, never gathered under 'amenities'.

Can the cleaning support our assessment and rating?

Clean Best supplies the documentation, and the documentation is the part a centre can actually use. The written procedure per room, safety data sheets for every product, WWCC and police check clearance details for the cleaners attending, our certificate of currency, and the monthly written audit against the scope. None of that is a claim about a rating — the rating is the regulator's business, not ours — but a centre being assessed should not have to chase its cleaning contractor for evidence.
